Telecom Commission sends back Trai proposals on spectrum sharing and trading guidelines; seeks more clarification

The Telecom Commission has decided to send back the Trai proposals on spectrum sharing and trading guidelines and seeking clarifications on some issues.
The Trai proposals were discussed at the meeting and now DoT expects Trai to send the final comments within 15 days. TRAI had last year recommended sharing of all categories of telecom airwaves held by operators, including spectrum allocated at old price of Rs.1,658 crore or assigned without auction.
The regulator had also recommended trading of spectrum, which will enable telecom operators that have a lower subscriber base or unutilised spectrum to trade in it.
Spectrum sharing will allow telcos to share their unutilised airwaves with other service providers in the same telecom circle.
Telcos have been anxiously awaiting the announcement of spectrum sharing and trading guidelines that will enable them to profit from unused airwaves.
